The Death Of Blues Singer…

The death of blues singer and songwriter John Martyn, who grew up in Glasgow, reminds us of John telling the tale of American singer Rosemary Clooney appearing at Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre on a Saturday night when the crowd was a bit boisterous.

So noisy were the audience that Rosemary’s attempts to begin failed because of the racket, and the crowd didn’t shut up until someone at the back of the hall bawled out: “Haw! Let the old bag sing!”

In a second, the Pavilion fell quiet and Rosemary announced: “Thank you. I’m glad that there is at least one gentleman in the audience tonight.”
