The Stables, Milton Keynes
JM was on good form, the place was packed and the evening was one long groove. It’s good to see that he can still hack it. The voice was (if I can steal a Stephen Fry quote) like swimming in chocolate and although the guitar was too far back in the mix for my liking, when he switched to acoustic and started hammering out Easy Blues (Jelly Roll Baker), he really rocked.
I’ve been a fan since I saw him in a back street folk club in Newquay in 1969, swigging scrumpy from a two gallon flagon between numbers and one of the first albums I bought was London Conversation (in mono !). It was good to see him up there on stage in the usually good humour after all he’s been through in recent years.
