The Anvil, Basingstoke

My wife Annette and I have been fans of John Martyn since first seeing him at the University of Stirling in 1980 and we haven’t missed a tour since then. What can I say about the man – he just gets better and better. His voice, unlike Dylan’s , still soars and is as strong as ever when needed especially during a brilliant Johnny Too Bad and as melodic and engaging as when he sang Never Let Me Go to finish the show. In between we had a greatest hits show with nothing from his latest albums and they were all brilliantly delivered. His expression of feeling in his delivery and playing is still so heartfelt after all this time and is what distinguishes him from so many others. Alan Thompson on bass was quite as phenomenal as ever and is a sheer delight to listen to, as were the other musicians, Arran Ahum on drums and Spencer Cozens on keyboards. Every song was ecstatically applauded and the band was given a standing ovation at the end although an encore would have been really appreciated but we couldn’t grumble after this show. The problem is that there are so many great songs that an encore would have left us all still wanting more and more so we’ll just have to be patient until the next tour ! Thanks John and we look forward to the new album. Hurry back
