Budget Compilation

May You Never: The Essential John Martyn was released by Universal Music on 25 November 2016. A budget priced compilation of previously released album tracks, alternate takes and mixes.

This imaginatively titled ‘essential’ compilation from Universal (following 2013s Sweet Little Mystery: The Essential John Martyn) includes 58 songs over 3CDs in a fold out digipack and is part of a series of releases in the same format that includes Status Quo, Dusty Springfield and Diana Ross amongst others.

Nothing new here for the majority of John fans. Further details in the discography section here.

Caught On The Hop

Incredibly it is 20 years since John released his album And. In this article Mark Cooper reviews the album and briefly interviews John.

Caught On The Hop

John Martyn, now label mate with Portishead, has been checking out the Chicago house scene, and revising his wardrobe. Mark Cooper salutes his return to eccentricity.

JOHN MARTYN – AND on Go! Discs
Martyn’s debut for Go! Discs home of Paul Weller, Portishead and Gabrielle.

AndOne of the great maverick stylists of  British music, John Martyn has been out on a limb in recent years, marooned first by some increasingly safe albums for Island in the mid ’80s and then by a deal with Permanent, who appeared to hide everything he recorded. Latterly, he seemed doomed to play out his middle age on an endless circuit of Britain’s town halls and arts centres, raging at his long suffering fans and churning out increasingly perfunctory readings of the likes of May You Never. Fortunately, Martyn’s finally been picked up by a label which fosters home grown talent, and promptly returned his best work in many a moon.

We Meet The Man Behind The Lens

Brian CookeHe’s snapped them all, from The Rolling Stones to Eric Clapton. Matt Clark meets York’s top music photographer.

Thirty something years ago four men went to a London pizza parlour to chew over ideas for their client’s new emblem. By the time lunch was over they were in agreement, the scribbling on a paper napkin would be offered to Richard Branson. He loved it’s ‘in your face’ simplicity, attitude and energy. Solid Air Malt

The Story of Solid Air Malt

Solid Air MaltbI moved to Scotland in the year 2000. At the time my favourite malt whisky was 21 year old Springbank and all things Springbank were alright with me. One of the bottles I bought included an offer to invest in a cask of Springbank. I decided to see if my best friend Andy Miller would be interested in sharing the purchase. Andy and I are friends from school and best man at each other’s wedding etc. Taking account of cost and quantity, we signed up for a 50 Litre (11 gallon) first fill Oloroso sherry cask. The cask was actually filled in May 2001.

Our plan was to see it mature for at least 15 years if not 16, which would coincide with our 60th birthday year and we could then have it bottled for our respective retirements.

In early January 2009, I received a call from the distillery saying that due to the small cask size, an increased rate of evaporation had occurred. The alcohol level (ABV = alcohol by
