Legend Martyn Dies, 60

Legend Martyn Dies, 60.

LEGENDARY folk and blues singer songwriter John Martyn died yesterday, aged 60.

Tributes flooded in for the musician – best known for his 1973 album Solid Air – after he passed away in hospital in Ireland. Drummer Phil Collins said: “John’s passing is terribly, terribly sad. He was unique and we’ll never see the likes of him again.”

Martyn was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s 2009 New Year honours.

His death was thought to be linked to his hard-drinking past. Martyn had his right leg amputated in 2003 as a result of a burst cyst caused by years of hell-raising. He was born in Surrey but raised in Glasgow.
