John Martyn Dies

As yet, no details of his death have been released. A notice on Martyn’s official website (www.johnmartyn.com) says only, “John Martyn 11th September 1948 – 29th January 2009. With heavy heart and an unbearable sense of loss we must announce that John died this morning.”

Over Martyn’s career he recorded 20 albums, working alongside names such as Eric Clapton, Phil Collins and David Gilmour.

He is probably best known for his 1973 album, Solid Air, whose title track was a tribute to friend and fellow Island artist Nick Drake.

To mark Martyn’s 60th birthday Island last year released a career-spanning 4CD boxed set, Ain’t No Saint, including live recordings and unreleased studio material.
